Antique Dealers

There seem to be a lot of antique dealers in my area. There seem to be more of them than there are churches, and that is saying a lot. I’m not sure why there seems to be such a large market for antiques in my area, but all of these shops have been around for a while, so they must be doing so pretty decent business. I used to work for one, and she was one that did end up almost going out of business. In the end she sold her shop to someone else and went another direction altogether.

Antique dealers seem to do better in areas were there is a lot of wealth, but I guess that might go without saying. What puzzles me is that my area isn’t exactly the wealthiest area around, though it is not the poorest one either. I have found many great things through some of these antique dealers, but most of the things I have gotten were not furniture. I have found some other interesting items that I would never have thought to look for in an antique store.

About half of the antique dealers in my area have other things in their stores as well. The one I used to work for has a large variety of what are called retro or vintage items. Antiques are items that are over one hundred years old. Everything else falls under the vintage category. These items can be anything, and I notice that some of the most popular items for these antique dealers seem to be items from the fifties and the sixties. There are some things from other decades but they don’t do quite as well as those from the mid 1900s.

I guess adding these items is what helps all of these antique dealers in business. Some of them have things like newer furniture as well as a huge variety of local crafts. You can find just about anything you could find at a craft show if you visit these antique dealers, and you can always be sure you are going to find some locally made candles and soaps. Those seem to be the most popular. Perhaps this will be the way of the future. Many shops that specialize in just one thing seem to have a hard time making a go of it. Perhaps if they offer a small variety they will last a lot longer.
